Palace of Charles V

A Renaissance palace inserted into the Nasrid city.

Palace of Charles V

Historical context

Designed by Pedro Machuca. Never fully finished during the imperial period, it now houses museums.

A square outside, a perfect circle inside. Commissioned by the emperor Charles V in 1526, this building is a bold Renaissance statement — and a clear break with everything around it. Some love it, some think it interrupts the Alhambra. Stand in the circular courtyard and listen to the acoustics.

What to notice

The contrast: sober classical stone here, delicate Nasrid stucco right next door.

Practical tip

The inner courtyard is free to walk through. Use it as a shortcut between palaces.

FAQ

How long does a good Alhambra visit take?

Plan around three hours minimum for the full route (Alcazaba, Nasrid Palaces, Generalife). Half a day is more comfortable.

Do I really need to book tickets in advance?

Yes. The Nasrid Palaces have limited timed slots. Always check the official Alhambra ticket website for current availability and rules.

What if tickets are sold out?

You can still visit the free areas (some walking paths, gates and viewpoints). Consider a guided tour that includes ticket, or come back another day.
