Mexuar

The first hall of the Nasrid Palaces: administration and justice.

Mexuar

Historical context

Modified after the Christian conquest, when part of the hall was converted for chapel use.

This was the working room of the palace, where officials met and petitions were heard. It’s deliberately restrained compared to what comes next. Notice the tile dado (a band of colored tiles at the base of the walls), the carved stucco above, and the calligraphy repeating a Nasrid motto: 'There is no victor but God.'

What to notice

The rhythm of ornament rising from tiles to stucco to wood — a whole vocabulary.

Practical tip

Don’t rush through. This hall is a rehearsal for everything you’re about to see.

FAQ

How long does a good Alhambra visit take?

Plan around three hours minimum for the full route (Alcazaba, Nasrid Palaces, Generalife). Half a day is more comfortable.

Do I really need to book tickets in advance?

Yes. The Nasrid Palaces have limited timed slots. Always check the official Alhambra ticket website for current availability and rules.

What if tickets are sold out?

You can still visit the free areas (some walking paths, gates and viewpoints). Consider a guided tour that includes ticket, or come back another day.
