Alcazaba

The military heart of the Alhambra, and the oldest surviving part.

Alcazaba

Historical context

Reinforced by the founder of the Nasrid dynasty, Muhammad I, in the 13th century, over earlier walls.

Climb the Torre de la Vela for one of the great views in Spain: Granada, the Albaicín and the Sierra Nevada. This fortress is why the site was built. Long before the palaces of poetry and water, this hilltop was a garrison. Notice the parade ground, the cisterns and the tight barrack layout.

What to notice

The scale of the walls, the position of the towers and the panoramic view over the Albaicín.

Practical tip

Do the Alcazaba before the Nasrid Palaces if your slot allows — the views wake you up.

FAQ

How long does a good Alhambra visit take?

Plan around three hours minimum for the full route (Alcazaba, Nasrid Palaces, Generalife). Half a day is more comfortable.

Do I really need to book tickets in advance?

Yes. The Nasrid Palaces have limited timed slots. Always check the official Alhambra ticket website for current availability and rules.

What if tickets are sold out?

You can still visit the free areas (some walking paths, gates and viewpoints). Consider a guided tour that includes ticket, or come back another day.
