Comares Palace

The state palace of the sultan.

Comares Palace

Historical context

Built mainly under Yusuf I and Muhammad V in the 14th century.

This palace was built to impress ambassadors and honor the ruler. Its centerpiece is the Court of the Myrtles and, at the far end, the Hall of Ambassadors inside the massive Comares Tower. Everything about this palace — light, water, scale — is designed to say: this is the seat of power.

What to notice

The transition from small, dim entry rooms to the great open court is a designed shock.

Practical tip

Look up at every threshold — the muqarnas ceilings reward the neck ache.

FAQ

How long does a good Alhambra visit take?

Plan around three hours minimum for the full route (Alcazaba, Nasrid Palaces, Generalife). Half a day is more comfortable.

Do I really need to book tickets in advance?

Yes. The Nasrid Palaces have limited timed slots. Always check the official Alhambra ticket website for current availability and rules.

What if tickets are sold out?

You can still visit the free areas (some walking paths, gates and viewpoints). Consider a guided tour that includes ticket, or come back another day.
